Green Mountain Running Camp Sessions 2 and 3
Published by
So not soon after leaving Hanover I found myself in a little town called Lyndonsville Vermont at the Lyndonsville State College for the end of the 2nd and the entire 3rd session of Green Mountain Running Camp, or GMRC. It was obvious as soon as I arrived at GMRC that it is one of the most well established camps in the northeast. The 2nd session had just under 300 kids and the 3rd session had just over 300. GMRC was a very structured camp with two runs a day, regular meals and then 2 breakouts a day. Breakouts were a chance for the counselors or coaches (or Nike employees!) to get to talk to the kids about whatever their specialty or passion was. I was lucky enough to have some of the Nike footwear and innovation kitchen folks with me for a couple of days so we gave a breakout that was a Q&A session about nike products. On top of these breakouts their was also regular speakers and skits put on by the camp recreation directors. I was "lucky" enough to have a special honor for the 3rd session of GMRC. Roy Benson, the director of the camp appointed me a counselor for group one. Now, back in the day running about 65 miles a week with the top guys at the camp wouldn't have been too bad, but after driving across the country, not sleeping in a real bed in 3 months, and coming down with some sort of stomach flu it was a bit more of a challenge then I expected. Especially considering the last run of the week, or the graduation run, if you will, was a 4 and a half mile run, uphill both ways. Well, at least uphill the one way we ran it. Needless to say, I was in the hurt-tank. Not just that, but during the week I was invited to guest judge and host a lip sync competition. Normally the lip sync competition is held in the auditorium, but randomly the power was out, so I pulled up my truck, put on some lights and blared my external speakers. Milley Cyrus never sounded so good! So yeah, if you add all of that plus the wonderful trails and a volleyball tournament then you have the Green Mountain Running Camp. My next, and final stop of the summer camp scene is Running Works in Canadenisis Pa.
